The Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering
has a long tradition of excellence in education and research.
Our goal is to prepare our students with the necessary skills
so that they can contribute to a highly technical global
society. The department’s recent name change to the “Department
of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering” reflects
the increasing role that the biological sciences are having
in the evolution of the profession. Commercial products targeting
human health care are becoming available as a result of the
unique contributions of chemical engineers in the expanding
biotechnology industry, particularly in the areas of bioprocessing,
biocatalysis, metabolic engineering, gene therapy, cell and
tissue engineering, drug design, discovery and delivery,
functional genomics and proteomics. A sample list of study
areas within our department chemical and biomolecular engineering
can be found under the link for Areas of Study. The philosophy
of the faculty is to provide a strong theoretical foundation
supported by practical applications of that knowledge. Recent
graduates are employed in variety of industries: polymer
(40%), process instrumentation and control (25%), environmental
(15%), and biotech or other areas (20%). A significant number
of our graduates also hold a managerial position or higher
in the chemical industry. This clearly demonstrates that
our students’ successes are reflected in their career
growth.
The department has nine faculty members and has recently hired three new assistant professors. Our faculty members have been frequently recognized for their excellence in research and teaching scholarship. A list of the ongoing research topics can be found on our Research page. |
